The Road Test in British Columbia

In BC, all driving tests are run by ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia). Most new drivers will work toward a Class 5 licence, which is the full passenger vehicle licence, requiring two stages under the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP):

Class 7 (Novice Licence)

To take your first road test… you’ll need to have held your Class 7 learner’s licence (your “L”) for at least 12 months.

The test checks your ability to safely handle everyday driving situations such as intersections, lane changes, parking, and speed control. Passing gives you your “N” (Novice) licence.

Class 5 (Full Licence)

After holding your N for at least 24 months, and with a clean record, you can book your Class 5 road test. This test includes more complex situations such as highway driving, merging, and busy traffic environments, and passing will remove the GLP restrictions, and give you your full licence.

When you have your Class 7 N licence, restrictions apply:

• Zero alcohol or drugs in your system while driving

• Only one passenger (unless they’re immediate family), unless you’re accompanied by a fully licensed supervisor over the age of 25

• Immediate suspension if you receive too many points for driving infractions during this period

How Road Tests Work in BC

All road tests are carried out at ICBC Driver Licensing Offices across the province. Here’s what to expect:

• Booking your test – Schedule online through ICBC or over the phone. Road tests often book up quickly, especially in places like Vancouver or Surrey, so plan ahead.

• Costs – There are set fees for both the Class 7 and Class 5 tests. You’ll also need pay when you’re issued your new licence card.

• What to bring – Your current licence, valid ID, and payment for your chosen test.

• Your vehicle – You must also provide a safe vehicle in good working order, with functioning lights, wipers, horn, and seat belts. Registration and insurance must be valid and ready for inspection.

• On the day – The examiner will take you on a set route near the test centre. They’ll give instructions but won’t be able to help you.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Examiners often see the same errors during tests, so here are a few to look out for:

• Not fully stopping – Always come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights. Rolling stops are a common reason for failing tests.

• Forgetting shoulder checks – EVERY lane-change, merge, or pulling away from the curb requires you to perform a shoulder check.

• Speed issues – Driving too fast or too slow for the current conditions will negatively affect your score.

• Poor lane discipline – Drifting, turning from the wrong lane, or failing to stay centred can lead to points off, and even automatic failure.

• Missing signs or signals – Watch especially carefully for school zones, pedestrian crossings, and yield signs. Missing any of these is considered a serious error that could end your test.
